Dear all,

After receiving positive feedback about the collated training course forms (one PDF download) available from the SLSNSW website, we decided to do the same for the endorsement and re-endorsement forms. These are now available on the Training & Education / Member Training / Trainer & Assessor Resources page http://www.surflifesaving.com.au/www/463/1001127/displayarticle/1005472.html under the heading Training Forms.

If you have any other feedback or comments about the website, please send them through as I am always hoping to find better ways of organising our resources on the site.
Regards,

Dear Member,

Welcome to Summer 2009/2010 and welcome to a new initiative for Surf Life Saving and its members.

You, our members, have a unique and important view of Surf Life Saving. A view from the sand, of what works, what doesn’t, what should and what could. A view that can change the way we operate.

Your role as the active and public face of this movement means you have both great responsibility and opportunity. You are closer to the community at a local level. You are the eyes, ears and importantly the voice of Surf Life Saving. And we want to listen to you.

Below is a link to a new member’s site, where we share with you our new direction and focus. We hope you take the time to watch it, and find inspiration in it.

You will also find a section for you to have a say; to get involved and have an opinion. Please take the time to read what other people are saying, agree or disagree with their views. Be open and honest, but be constructive. This is an opportunity to help guide Surf Life Saving forward, to improve and better ourselves and our movement.

Dear Colleagues in Surf Lifesaving
I am pleased to announce that as part of the SLSA international development aid program, we have been granted an Assignment from the AusAid funded Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) to have a young volunteer surf lifesaver travel to Bali to work with the Indonesian Surf Life Saving Association as a Water Safety Education Officer teaching water safety in schools and communities and to train the lifeguards to also deliver similar programs. This Assignment is for 10 months from July 2010.
The Assignment details are below, noting that applications close 26 February 2010. Could you please distribute this information to those amongst our membership who you believe may have an interest?
Many thanks
Best regards

Assignment Description
Assignment Number: 28IDGO-A18   (APO Assignment)

Assignment Position Title: Water Safety Education Officer

Name of Host Organisation: Indonesia Surf Life Saving Association (Balawista-Indonesia)

Location: Denpasar, Indonesia

Duration: 10 months

Description of the Host Organisation:

Founded in 1972 the Balawista Surf Lifesaving Club on Kuta Beach, Bali started the Surf Life Saving Association of Indonesia and became the country’s first member of the International Life Saving Federation. In its three decades of operation it has saved thousands of lives. For example the Club rescued 299 people during 2008 alone, including fishermen at sea and swimmers at some of Badung’s most notorious beaches including Seminyak, Ulawatu and Jimbaran. In 2005 the club saved 351 people, losing just 14 to the sea. Lifeguards at Kuta Beach advocate greater education as the best way to reduce the number of people at risk of drowning. The Lifeguards patrol more than four kilometres of a beach that attracts thousands of people to its waters every month; the high numbers add to the risk of drowning. However, many domestic tourists that come to Kuta, or other beaches, don’t know about staying between the red and yellow flags. If beach safety was taught in schools across the country far fewer people would be at risk of drowning.

Position Summary:

The key objective of the assignment is to establish a system that will enable the ongoing development of sustainable and effective school and community water safety and lifesaving programs to support drowning prevention/reduction in Bali. Balawista-Indonesia has limited materials, resources and trained school and community educators to deliver swimming, water safety and lifesaving education to the Balinese community. The focus of this assignment is to develop and deliver instructor/teacher training programs, in-country education programs and materials targeted at schools and local villages across Bali. The AYAD will assist in review, updating and implementing instructor training programs in lifesaving and water safety education for schools and the community. The AYAD will also assist in developing and implementing lifesaving, resuscitation and other water safety programs and associated materials and resources. Additionally, the AYAD will consult with local community leaders, school leaders and teachers, government officials, and liaise with key members of Surf Life Saving Australia, and the Asia-Pacific Board of the International Life Saving Federation.

Assignment Outcomes to be achieved by the AYAD:

• Established a formal trainer training program for teachers, lifeguards and community members to learn all aspects of lifesaving and water safety
• Developed a suite of Balinese lifesaving and water safety education programs including relevant materials and resources
• Undertook an island-wide lifesaving and water safety education and training needs analysis and associated priorities with a focus on key towns and villages
• Assisted in developing and implementing systems to foster and support the trainer network
• Received and collated drowning prevention needs from provinces within Indonesia and developed a draft action plan

Essential Minimum Qualifications required by the AYAD:

• SLSA Surf Bronze Medallion / Certificate
• First Aid Certificate
• SLSA Training Officer Certificate

Essential Minimum Experience required by the AYAD:

• Three years’ experience as a surf lifesaver
• Two years’ experience as a Training Officer
• Familiarity with lifesaving, resuscitation and water safety training programs
• Participated in a range of training experiences with a variety of learner groups

Desirables:

• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Effective communication skills
• Have a genuine empathy for the needs, feelings and aspirations of those involved in developing organisations
• A tolerance and understanding of cultural difference
• Ability to refer requests for assistance quickly to the most appropriate person
• Proactive in seeking opportunities

Description of Assignment Location:

The project covers the entire island of Bali. The project office is located in Kuta area, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia.

Information on Accommodation Options:

Assistance with the identification of suitable, secure and affordable accommodation will be provided by the In-country Manager and the Host Organisation.

Disability Forum
« Reply #6 on: March 05, 2010, 04:50:37 PM »
Dear All

SLSA has released information around the Disability Forum that is being held in Sydney on the 9-11 April 2010.

The SLSA Forum series is part of the National Leadership Strategy and attempts to build leadership within particular membership groups. As such, this forum has three main outcomes:

 1. To provide an opportunity for members involved in people with disabilities engagement to network and share their experiences.

2. To capture and develop good practice models for engaging people with disabilities within Surf Life Saving.

3. To develop leaders and champions for engaging people with disabilities within Surf Life Saving.

The Forums are about engaging those who are already active in the topic area and can contribute to the development of good practice that can then be shared.  NSW is able to send 4 participants to this forum, and forms must be received at SLSNSW no later than Tuesday 23rd March 2010.

Can I ask that you send this on to your branch education contacts who you know are involved in working with special needs groups or activities within Surf Life Saving.  This information will go out in Club Mail this week, yet would be great if we can do some targeted recruitment for this program.

Should you have any questions, please contact Claire Parry, Manager Member Services.

Regards

Pamela

Dear All

VOLUNTEER GRANTS 2010

The FAHCSIA Volunteer Grants Program is now open and SLSNSW is encouraging all Branches and Clubs to apply. This grant is particularly relevant to Education this year. Details are as follows:

The Volunteer Grants Program provides funding of between $1,000 and $5,000 to help non-profit organisations to:
contribute towards the costs of training courses for volunteers; and/or
purchase portable, tangible, small equipment items to help volunteers; and/or
contribute towards fuel reimbursement for private vehicle use when carrying out volunteer activities.

Examples of the types of equipment you can apply for include:

·         Data Projector (e.g. cost $699 for a Dell 1210S Projector www.dell.com.au )

·         Screen (e.g. cost $222.00 for a  DLHTMW1212 Hanging Screen from Audio Visual Warehouse www.audiovisualwarehouse.com.au )

·         Laptop (e.g. cost $1699 for a Dell Latitude E5500 www.dell.com.au )

·         Training Defibrillator (e.g. cost $765.00 for a Laerdal FRx Heartstart Trainer + Training Pads II  ordered from SLSNSW)

Also attached you will find a list of VGP Common Equipment Requests from 2009 which will give you some more ideas.

It is a relatively straight forward application (the application shouldn’t take more than one hour) and all they require is a demonstration on how the equipment will assist your volunteers, the number of volunteers/people the equipment will assist and the cost of the equipment. Attached is a guide on how to complete the application form.

I’m sure you’ll agree this is a great opportunity for all surf lifesaving clubs to apply for financial assistance towards equipment and training for volunteers. Too good an opportunity to miss really.

Applications close on Friday 16 April 2010 at 2 pm AEST. To apply online go to http://fahcsia.gov.au

Should you require assistance with the application process, Kelle Storey Manager, Sponsor & Partnership Development for SLSNSW is happy to help you.

Dear All

In May 2009 a Circular was released (attached) advising of the new procedure regarding the issuing of Units of Competency now associated with the SMIRBD award. It would appear that a number of people are still not selecting the 2 units when entering their assessment requests in SurfGuard. Consequently the participants are only receiving the Surf award, as opposed to the Surf award and the 2 UOC.

Steve has run a report extracting these members, and I will get Lisa to manually issue the 2 UOC to the 113 members affected over the next few weeks. However, to prevent this from becoming an ongoing issue, please remind your members that they will need to select the 2 UOC when entering information into SG. At this stage they both need to be selected, however I will follow up with SG to see if we can have them automatically selected like with the Cert II.

I have attached the report for your information – you can see for yourselves what clubs are not following this procedure and act accordingly. Note again that we will manually issue all these UOC for the 113 participants in the attached report – there is no need for you to take any action in SG for this.

Thanks in advance
Pamela
